YOUR Building …. Needs YOU!
by Damara Burnett, Sea Otter Community Center Coordinator
Ukulele Club, Needlework Night, Internet Café, Tennis Lessons, Yoga, Youth Gaming . . . a lot has been happening these days at the “Old Club,” and this Fall, the Sea Otter Community Center (SOCC) is going to host a handful of Community Education classes, too.
If you’ve ever contemplated teaching a class in an informal setting, this is your opportunity. Share your hidden hobby, talent, or area of expertise with others and, if you like, perhaps make a few bucks in the process! Don’t want to teach, but interested in taking a course? Watch for a Community Education mailing due out in late September.

The mission of the SOCC is to provide healthy, year-round activities the whole community can enjoy. To do this and pay utilities, we must charge nominal fees to users of the building. Recently, the SRSA Board drafted a fee schedule; the proposed schedule differentiates, for instance, between residents who want to hold a free, open-to-the-public event (there’s no cost) and organizations holding a for-profit event. (Click on the fee schedule above to view.) Community comments can be made on the proposed fee schedule by emailing seldoviasocc@gmail.com or by attending the next Board meeting, Tuesday, September 4th at 5 pm.
Volunteers make it all happen. Last month alone the SOCC saw 14 volunteers accumulate more than 36 hours. And, a big thank you to our recent building donors who have helped make the SOCC a better space:
The Jotimaz Group
Joni Reynertson
Ila Dillon
Seldovia Police Department
Jennifer & Mariah Burleson
We still have a “Wish List!”

If you’re interested in helping out – or just want to chat about “possibilities” for the SOCC – please stop by during office hours: Monday & Friday 12-4, Wednesday 7-9. We’ll see you here!
