There’s a New Girl in Town – Welcome Kaya Della Baines!

| October 30, 2013 | 0 Comments

Baby KayaSeldovia welcomes baby Kaya Della Baines, who was born in Homer on Sunday, October 13 at 10:28 p.m.   She weighed eight pounds, 10 ounces.

Kaya’s parents are Darin and Jennifer Baines of Seldovia.  Her maternal grandparents are Frank and Shelby Beaudry of Canby, Oregon, and paternal grandparents are the late Dan and Della Baines.   Kaya’s great-grandparents are Rod and Sunni Hilts of Seldovia, and Velma Baines of Sitka.

I had a chance to ask Jennifer, the new mom, a few questions about becoming a family – and she wanted to share these thoughts with the community of Seldovia.

Gazette:  The name Della is in honor of Kaya’s late grandmother, Darin’s mom, where does the name Kaya come from?

Jennifer:  Kaya is just a name we found that we like. It’s Native American and means, “wise child”.

Gazette:  You had a difficult last few months of your pregnancy and had to take it easy.  Do you have anyone you would like to thank?

Jennifer:  I would like to thank everyone who helped out while I was pregnant. Especially Sunni and Rod and Jonathan and Melanie Hoard. They were big helps. Oh and Tracy Philpot, for the laughs and encouragement! I also want to thank Janel (ferry captain) and Camille Turner, I really appreciated their encouragement and good advice throughout my pregnancy.

Gazette:  How does it feel to be a family?

Jennifer:  Being a family is great!  It’s something both Darin and I have wanted to experience to its fullest for ourselves.

Gazette: What are your plans?  You recently moved into a downtown Seldovia apartment – are you working in Seldovia? Do you have plans to stay long-term in our community?

Jennifer:  I believe Darin and I plan to stay long-term. I feel like this is our ‘home’.  Moving away from the community isn’t something we want to do anytime soon. Darin is currently looking for work here and I just became a Scentsy consultant. So I’m planning to sell Scentsy products here in Seldovia!

Gazette:  Anything else you would like to say about being a mom, living in Seldovia, loving life with your precious baby girl?

Jennifer:  Pretty much just very happy with everything going on. I love Seldovia and the people here. So glad they have welcomed me into the community. I love my husband, he’s a good man. Turning into a good father as well. Being a mom is tough. But well worth it. I couldn’t ask for a better little girl.
