Let it Snow, Let it Snow, Let it Snow

On December 22, around 7:00pm it started to snow! In the spirit of Christmas, it just kept on snowing! All night, and then again, all day yesterday! We had about 9-10 inches by early yesterday morning here in the heart of Seldovia on Main Street.
Most of Sunday, it snowed and snowed! Though it was a quiet day, and most folks were hunkering down at home, hopefully wrapping presents, sipping hot chocolate or spiced rum, we ran into Matt Gallien at the Fuel and Lube, who had to call in (since the Flube is normally closed on Sundays) to fuel up in order to maintain the streets of town.

The photos below were taken last evening as the Chissus clan went down to manage the boats in the harbor that required shoveling. The harbor was still, ice on the water and each finger of the dock was completely untouched. The only other activity in the harbor were otters that had the whole harbor to themselves and had broken through the ice and were swimming about playfully, just watching us breaking through the fresh snow as we trudged from boat to boat. There was one finger near the end of B dock that the otters had completely cleared off in order to have a place to get up and out of the water. There was easily over 2 feet of snow on the docks – and boats!
I’ll be heading out today for more photos, as there has been at least 6 more inches since then! My husband spoke to a few folks out the road this morning, and so far, in the last 24 hours, they have measured over 29 inches of snow! It is still coming down – and as the article before this one mentioned, we are currently running on generation from the Gerry Willard Generation Plant – so folks out the road are without power on this Christmas eve. Stay warm everyone – and here’s to a very White Christmas!
Seldovia Snow And Ice

We woke up this morning with 6-7 inches on the ground here in town along Main Street! The flakes were beautiful, big and lightweight coming down in a flurry. This photo was taken from the City Dock. Huge sheets of ice were making their way out of Seldovia Bay towards Kachemak Bay, though many were getting hung up at the AMHS pier! You can see them all floating out to sea in the next photo!
I love the snow – everything is so white and clean, giving a soft black and white filter to our colorful world! These are precious moments, living in Seldovia, enjoying the quiet of a Sunday morning, with the snow falling all about you, and nothing but an enthusiastic lab to lead your way, as you break through the perfect and untouched layer of fresh snow. There are a few challenges, like finding a few tire tracks to follow so the snow doesn’t come over the top of your boots, keeping your camera dry during the myriad of photo moments, but these are some of my favorite Alaska days!
