Seldovia Fire & EMS to Raffle a Brand New Rancher
by Jenny Chissus
So, do you feel lucky?
You should! We are so fortunate to have a great Fire and EMS Volunteer department here in Seldovia! In the last 30 days, we have had 5 emergency calls in Seldovia where our Fire and EMS services were needed.
We are lucky to have such a well-equipped Fire and EMS team, and that is due to a very organized and concerned group who works hard to make sure we have what we need to serve the community of Seldovia. Living remotely, we are on our own to immediately respond to emergencies and having the right tools, equipment and trained team is essential! Everything from oxygen (including expensive hazmat transportation to and from Homer) and EpiPens for allergic reactions (that can be up to $350 for two – and which also expire!) to all the supplies that are used in day-to-day operations, like gloves, antiseptic, bandages, ointments, etc. need to be on stock and immediately available to our teams. It is very expensive to have a functioning, efficient and well-stocked department that is ready to care for all types of emergencies!
To help raise funds, the Seldovia Fire and EMS departments have purchased a brand new Honda Rancher to raffle off on July 5th. Each ticket is $50.00 and there will only be 300 tickets sold. Once they are all sold out – they will be SOLD OUT. The value of the 4 wheeler is around $8,000 (Fire and EMS will take care of the withholding taxes incurred on the prize). The drawing will be held on July 5, 2014 at the Linwood at 6:00pm. Of course, you do not need to be present to win! Tickets may be purchased at the following locations:
- City Office
- City Harbormaster’s Office
- Seldovia Fuel and Lube
- KacheYak Trading Post
- Boardwalk Hotel
- Linwood Bar and Grill
- Creationz
If you have ever been served by our Fire and EMS crew, and want to acknowledge the GREAT work they do for us in Seldovia – this is a great way to make a donation – with a chance to win a brand new 4 wheeler! How fabulous is that? Their service and skills are invaluable to Seldovia, and my hope is that the tickets will run out far before their deadline, as folks show their support and belief in the importance of having a well-functioning department with updated equipment and supplies. Thank you in advance for your continued support of our Fire and EMS services here in Seldovia.
If you are feeling the desire to support the effort, but cash is short – you can always VOLUNTEER! Both teams are always looking for volunteers to help in a variety of capacities to serve our community.

CAMPFIRES ALLOWED IN DEVELOPED CAMPSITES ON THE KENAI PENINSULA
Open campfires are now allowed only in developed campsites in the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge, Kenai Peninsula State Parks, and Chugach National Forest lands on the Kenai Peninsula. Campfires must be in a metal fire grate provided by a state or federal agency in a developed campsite. Use of personal charcoal grills, cooking stoves, and gas grills are also allowed.
On other state and private lands on the Kenai Peninsula, cooking and warming fires are allowed in an established campfire ring. Burn permits are still suspended until further notice.
While current weather has moderated fire behavior on the Funny River fire, fire danger remains high over much of the Kenai Peninsula. Residents and visitors are urged to continue to use extreme caution with anything that could ignite a fire.
Questions regarding this emergency restriction should be directed to:
Kenai National Wildlife Refuge (907) 262-7021
Chugach National Forest (907) 743-9500
Kenai Area State Parks (907) 262-5581

Seldovia Beach Volleyball
by Jen Giles
July 5th the high school mixed-6 volleyball team will be hosting a fundraiser volleyball tournament at the Outside Beach to help pay for new uniforms. Last year was our first year with a mixed-6 team and we managed to scab together uniforms with basically anything that was red and had a number on it- this ranged from old girls’ jerseys to red t-shirts and tape. If we hope to join the lineup of State contenders next year I want us to look the part and represent our community well.
My hope is to make this a fun annual event, with future proceeds benefiting the Booster Club. The tournament will be set up as a buy in single elimination bracket, winner and runner up taking home generous cash prizes. To make the winnings enticing and the event profitable I am asking for help from the community to come up with the prize money. Any donation, big or small, will be a huge help in making this tournament a success. Donations would also be appreciated for food to host a barbeque in addition for participants and spectators as a sort of “concession stand.”
Most importantly I want people to come out and participate. The goal is to have a 16 team bracket of 2 man teams (high school age and up) playing on two courts for an afternoon filled with action, and hopefully some sunshine!
To make a donation or to sign up a team please contact me, Jen Giles at 399-3563. Thank you in advance.
In Honor of Mary
by Jenny Chissus
We are so proud of our friend and local Seldovian, Mike Webber who will be participating again this year in the Relay for Life, to honor his wife of almost 50 years, Mary, who lost her battle with melanoma over 5 years ago.
“I’m participating in Relay For Life to help raise funds to fight this beast that is destroying lives and in some way, impacting all of our lives. I’m asking for your help and support in any way you choose to participate. Thank you!”
