Watch For the Twins!
by Jenny Chissus, photos by Connie Geagel
Keep a watch out for the moose twin calves that have been sighted along Jakolof Bay Road with their mother this past month. This has been a real treat for folks who get a glimpse of this skittish trio on this side of Kachemak Bay.

Moose tend to be rarely seen as we have such a high population of black bear, and we are closed off by glaciers to the main peninsula, so there isn’t a transient population. I’ve never had the pleasure of seeing moose since I moved to Seldovia over nine years ago! With all the hiking on vacant lands and remote properties out the road, I have seen evidence of moose (moose droppings) but they have always kept out of sight.
Moose mama’s (cows) are very protective of their young, and can run up to 35 miles an hour! Though they are herbivores, cows normally weigh around 800 pounds and you certainly don’t want to get in between them and their young. Moose are known to trample, stomp on, kick and even kill a person who threatens them or their calves. They may appear cute and “stuffed animal” like – but do not get too close!
Please keep a look out as you drive out Jakolof Bay Road – as they have been seen at Barabara Creek, Kasitsna Bay Lab (where these photos were taken) and Jakolof Bay. With snowy weather and poor visibility, please be aware that they are out and walking the road – so drive safe!
Thanks Layla and Connie for the photos!
Seldovia Snow And Ice
by Jenny Chissus
We woke up this morning with 6-7 inches on the ground here in town along Main Street! The flakes were beautiful, big and lightweight coming down in a flurry. This photo was taken from the City Dock. Huge sheets of ice were making their way out of Seldovia Bay towards Kachemak Bay, though many were getting hung up at the AMHS pier! You can see them all floating out to sea in the next photo!
I love the snow – everything is so white and clean, giving a soft black and white filter to our colorful world! These are precious moments, living in Seldovia, enjoying the quiet of a Sunday morning, with the snow falling all about you, and nothing but an enthusiastic lab to lead your way, as you break through the perfect and untouched layer of fresh snow. There are a few challenges, like finding a few tire tracks to follow so the snow doesn’t come over the top of your boots, keeping your camera dry during the myriad of photo moments, but these are some of my favorite Alaska days! If you are in Seldovia – enjoy the beautiful snow, and check out below, as according to the weather underground, there is more on the way!
Ferry Just Docked in Homer – 6:30pm
by Jenny Chissus
Update – AMHS ferry just docked in Homer, and most likely won’t be arriving into Seldovia until 9:30 or 10:00pm as explained by the Homer AMHS office. It is going to be a late night for Homer bound travelers!
Weather Delays for the AMHS
Editor’s Note: The Kennicott was scheduled to be in Seldovia on Friday (12/13) morning at 7:00am, but due to these delays, it is not expected to make it to Seldovia until Friday evening – perhaps around 7:00pm. Please plan accordingly, and call to confirm the progress of the vessel. Here is a link to the site where you can see the actual location of every AMHS ferry in the state – a very handy tool!
