Over the Rhine Brings Music and Fans to Seldovia
Something a little different for Seldovia, a band bringing an audience, but we can come too!
Over the Rhine is coming to Seldovia Wednesday, Sept. 4th and bringing an entourage of fans traveling with Alaska Train Tours with them aboard the Discovery, arriving Seldovia harbor early afternoon after a wildlife tour on the boat. After a few hours of walking and sightseeing in Seldovia they will join Seldovians for a concert hosted by the Seldovia Arts Council at the Seldovia Conference Center at 5:30 PM. Tickets are the regular Seldovia Arts Council price of $15.00 and child and family rates will be available. “MEET ME AT THE EDGE OF THE WORLD” is certainly an appropriate name for a new album released in Alaska!
“There may be no more soothing voice in music than Karin Bergquist’s.
She could be interpreting jazz standards, but fortunately she applies that balm
to her and husband Linford Detweiler’s beautifully languid originals…”

PRESS RELEASE – NASHVILLE, TN – Meet Me At The Edge Of the World, the upcoming double album from the highly acclaimed band Over The Rhine, is set for a September 3rd release on their Great Speckled Dog label. Over The Rhine’s nucleus of husband and wife duo Karin Bergquist and Linford Detweiler have created their most ambitious offering to date with Meet Me At The Edge Of The World, and they did not need to look far to find their muse.
The 19 tracks on Meet Me At The Edge Of The World were all recorded live in only six days, with Grammy-winning producer Joe Henry (Bonnie Raitt, Bettye LaVette et al) at the helm. Most of the songs were literally born out of the land surrounding the 1830s brick farm house Bergquist and Detweiler purchased eight years ago in southern Ohio. The couple refers to their home as Nowhere Farm. Upon moving there, they knew little about the land’s flora and fauna. Over time, the land began to slowly reveal itself to them as they became more in tune with the natural setting and began calling trees, birds, weeds and wildflowers by name. Eventually the surroundings seeped into the music, both physically and spiritually, that would become Meet Me At The Edge Of The World.
All songs were written by Bergquist and Detweiler, with the exception of their stunning rendition of The Band’s “It Makes No Difference.” The transitional experience of moving from the city to the farm is captured on “All Of It Was Music,” while the two trade vocals for the first time on the beautiful “All Over Ohio”. The heartwarming “Earthbound Love Song” cites the love of Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash as an important reference for any aspiring musical couple, and “Favorite Time Of Light” documents the daily ritual of stepping outside when the changing evening light conjures an imaginary Ohio Ocean. “Baby If This Is Nowhere” is an affirmation that Nowhere Farm is where they know they are meant to be. And on “Sacred Ground” and “Blue Jean Sky” the couple discovered a new sound as they began singing in unison for the first time.
Through the years, Over The Rhine’s music has maintained an important place in the lives of their thousands of devoted fans. Their songs become close friends and often accompany the band’s followers during life’s major milestones, both happy and sad. There is no doubt the songs on Meet Me At The Edge Of The World will also become tried and true companions.
If it is too good to be true…. its another scam!
by Jenny Chissus
Shad Haller, our Police Chief brought this to my attention, as this is one of the latest scams going around – and it has made it to a resident in Seldovia! Thankfully, this individual was not fooled by the very official notice and “real” looking check, and notified our local police chief who verified that it was indeed a scam.
Many scammers are out there, preying on the hopes and dreams of folks looking to win big! This particular scam sent a large check – shown below that the victim is to deposit – which is claimed to “pay for” your tax liability on your winnings! The hope from the scammer is that you “deposit” the check, and send them the money for the for your taxes – via Western Union Money Transfer or Moneygram! Obviously, the check will bounce and you will have lost a significant amount of money!
Though the name of the company on the check is legitimate, this offer is not, and as you can see when Chief Shad Haller made a copy of the check – the words “VOID and FAUX” (false or fake – in french) appeared on the copy of the check!
These scam artists are getting clever as they use real names and addresses, mentioning normal shopping companies involved in the “sweepstakes” like Wal-mart, Sears, Home Depot, etc!
Shad just wanted to spread the word – that even here in Seldovia, we are not immune to the criminal activity that is sweeping the nation – trying to take advantage of people who aren’t aware of this criminal behavior trying to steal your money! Don’t be fooled – if it seems to be too good to be true – it most likely is! If you get anything like it – do let Shad know, so that he can help inform our community!
