Screen Shot 2014-02-28 at 9.55.44 AMTo the generous and supportive community of Seldovia!  This weekend we had the drawing for the Kindle Fire HDX.    Our 7 students got out the door and made phone calls to relatives and friends, and sold $1,925 in tickets to raise funds to attend Close Up in Washington DC this April!  Thankful for the anonymous donation of the Kindle Fire, all those monies go directly to funding travel, lodging and tuition expenses for the trip.

The winner’s name was drawn this past weekend at the High School Basketball tournament, and the winner was Jeanice Janes – Coach Mark Janes’ mother from Texas!   Congratulations Jeanice!  We want to sincerely thank all the generous folks who bought tickets from students, not only once, but twice and even three times!  One local gal said “I’ll buy tickets from anyone who stops by the door to ask!  I love to support our kids and our school and Close Up is a valuable trip!  I just buy a few from each – spread it out a bit!”

Also, we had a baked goods sale that also included a wide variety of items from canned fish, bread, cookies, eclairs to brownies, piroshkis, and two beautiful handcrafted wood items built and donated by Dick Yingling to raise an additional $690!

So, thank you again to the entire community for your endless and continued support of our Susan B English students!

Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training comes to Seldovia!

Have you ever wanted to find a way to contribute to the community if something major occurred?  The Community Emergency Response Team or CERT is a mechanism to do just that – we prepare for large-scale emergencies and natural disasters and act as a bridge between our established responders and community members.  CERT training is an all-volunteer program that consists of basic training sessions that teach skills in disaster preparedness, fire suppression, disaster medical operations, light search and rescue, team organization, and more.

This is a national program administered locally by the Kenai Peninsula Borough Office of Emergency Management.  Our goal is to train people to care for themselves, their families, and their communities in a disaster.  At the conclusion of the class, participants have the option of joining the CERT team.  If people wish to join the CERT team they are issued basic safety/response gear and are given the opportunity for additional training and activities.

The Office of Emergency Management is bringing this training to Seldovia with the cooperation of the Seldovia Fire Department, the Seldovia Village Tribe, and the State of Alaska Division of Homeland Security & Emergency Management.  Class sessions include:

Training Schedule

All class sessions will be held at the SVT conference center.  To reserve your spot in the class, please sign up at the post office or online at www.kpvolunteers.org/seldovia.asp.

There is no cost for the class, people of all ages (13 +) and physical abilities are welcome.  All supplies required for the class will be provided.  If you have any questions, please contact Dan Nelson, program coordinator, at dnelson@borough.kenai.ak.us or at 262-2098.

by Tania Spurkland
HawkeyeHermanHere is a concert you don’t want to miss, an evening of the Blues with Michael “Hawkeye” Herman.  He is performing in Seldovia this Saturday evening, March 1st at 7:30 pm at SBE School. He will be here in Seldovia as part of “Blues in the Schools” which is sponsored by Jack and Debbie Oudiz, Ocean Shores Seaside Lodging, Boss Hoggz, the Charlotte Martin Foundation, Conoco Phillips, Rasmuson Foundation , the Alaska State Council on the Arts, the Homer Council on the Arts, and  the Seldovia Arts Council. Tickets are $5 at the door. There is free admission for youth (ages 18 and under).

We are also excited to announce that Hawkeye will be presenting workshops at SBE School with our students on both Monday and Tuesday, March 2nd and 3rd !

With over 40 years of performing experience, Michael “Hawkeye” Herman exemplifies the range of possibilities in acoustic blues, and personifies versatile musicianship, originality, and compelling artistry as a blues storyteller. His dynamic performances have won him a faithful following, and he leads a very active touring schedule of performances at festivals, concerts, school programs, and workshops.

Hawkeye performs a wide variety of traditional blues, ballads, swing, and original tunes, on six-string and twelve-string guitar, and is an adept and exciting practitioner of slide guitar and slide mandolin. His music has been included in video documentaries and in three hit theatrical productions, and his solo CD, Blues Alive!, released in 1998, was greeted by rave reviews and greatly increased the demand for his live performances at major blues and folk festivals. His newest CD, It’s All Blues To Me!, was released in May of 2005.

Hope to see you there!
