AlanLauraHaskinsOur new principal Alan Haskins and his wife Laura, are excited about coming to Seldovia and working with our community and students.  Alan plans on moving to Seldovia in July to familiarize himself with our school and meet with the community in preparation for the 2014-2015 school year.  Laura will join him in Seldovia as soon as she gets their daughter off to the University of Alaska in Fairbanks.   They will be making an initial quick trip to Seldovia in June to celebrate Laura’s birthday and meet folks.  But until then, here’s a quick introduction to our new Principal/Teacher for Susan B English School and his wife, Laura!
Gazette:  What was your favorite part about Unalaska?  Both the teaching/coaching/admin part – and the lifestyle?
The Haskins:  Our favorite part of Unalaska has been the laid back lifestyle!  There’s no commute, and no rush!  People stop to talk to you at the grocery store and wave when they drive by.  It’s been a wonderful place to raise our kids and, Continue Reading

Seldovia’s Small Town Doctor Retires

| March 26, 2014 | 3 Comments

by Jenny Chissus

Doc ReynoldsOne key to a successful community is the presence of medical care.  As a Realtor, this is a question often asked by buyers looking to either relocate or invest in our beautifully situated community by the sea.  I have always been proud to say that we have a great doctor, who lives in Seldovia full-time and serves our community alongside our volunteer Fire and EMS crews.

At the end of April, the question may be answered quite differently.  Our resident doctor, Dr. Larry Reynolds will be retiring after 40 years of service to the community of Seldovia!  I wanted to sit down with Doc and Cheryl (his wife and office manager) to go over this big transition for Seldovia, and for them!

It all began in 1974, when Doc and Cheryl were living in the San Francisco area in California.  As Cheryl tells it, she had grown up playing outdoors and living and loving that outdoor lifestyle, nature, the works.  As she grew, she saw the build up of the area, and her peaceful open spaces and woods were replaced by buildings and more buildings, and the fresh air became polluted, and she knew that she wanted to get back to a healthy environment.   After Doc’s residency, and Cheryl’s nursing education, they were both researching areas to go, where they could be out in nature, open a small practice to serve a small community, and Alaska had a lot of appeal.

Screen Shot 2014-03-26 at 6.36.01 AMThey had some good friends in Fairbanks who invited them up to visit – so they packed their car and set off for their Alaska adventure in January!  They followed the ski runs as they drove north, and the skiing got better and better – the further north they went!  They stayed with friends in Fairbanks while they studied Alaska, and the demographics of the many small towns, rainfall, climate, population, etc.

Doc really liked the idea of Homer, so they visited and met with Doctor Eneboe who was the only practicing physician in Homer at the time, and he didn’t want a partner, Continue Reading

SVT LogoSeldovia Village Tribe Launches Community Oral History Project Preserving Seldovia’s Photos, Films and Memories

Do you know your family’s stories? Have you thought about how to pass them down to future generations? Do you have family photographs and slides that you wonder how to protect, or old VHS tapes or family films that you can’t watch anymore because they are deteriorating or you don’t have the equipment? The Seldovia Museum has an answer!

If you have a post office box in Seldovia, you may remember getting a survey in the mail about a year ago, asking about your potential interest in an oral history project the Seldovia Museum was hoping to do. We got a terrific response, showing strong support from the community of Seldovia, and we are thrilled to tell you that this project was awarded funding from the Institute for Museum & Library Services. The project, called “In Our Own Words”, is now underway!

SVT Museum Old 4th of July photosThere are several parts to this project. We are surveying recordings we already have, as well as gearing up to do new interviews and add material, such as historical photos and video, to our archives. But this is truly a community project: although our main goal is to record the many stories and images of Seldovia for the public, we also want to assist community members in preserving your own Seldovia-related stories, photos, videos, and audio recordings. We can Continue Reading
