Homer Electric Association crews are in the Seldovia area this afternoon working to restore power.

The outage, which is affecting 352 HEA meters along Jakolof Bay Road to Big Tutka Bay, began on Monday morning, December 24th, after a heavy snowfall in the area damaged the power line.

HEA crews are currently again patrolling the line between the Gerry Willard Generation Plant and Six Mile Jakolof Bay Road.

If the crew is able to verify the line is clear, an attempt will be made to energize the line from the generation plant to Six Mile.

If that is successful, an attempt will be made to energize the line from Six Mile to the end of Jakolof Bay Road.

As a precautionary measure, the emergency generator has been put on line to ensure power continues to be provided to Port Graham and Nanwalek should a problem arise with the generator in Seldovia.

If you do not have power, please call HEA’s outage reporting hotline at 1-888-8OUTAGE (1-888-868-8243).

Please remember to always stay away from down power lines. The lines are extremely dangerous and getting too close to a line can cause serious injury or death.

Homer Electric Association crews are enroute to Big Tutka Bay this morning to make repairs to a damaged power line.  The crew originally planned to access the area with a boat, but determined that by taking a helicopter they will be able to reach the damaged line prior to high tide.

An additional HEA crew from the Kenai area has been sent to assist in the restoration work.

The outage, which is affecting 352 HEA meters along Jakolof Bay Road to Big Tutka Bay, began on Monday morning, December 24th, after a heavy snowfall in the area damaged the power line.

HEA crews have made repairs to equipment along Jakolof Bay Road, but the system still indicates there is a problem on the line between Seldovia and Six Mile on Jakolof Bay Road.  The situation prevents HEA from energizing the line from the Gerry Willard Generation Plant along Jakolof Bay Road because an unexpected fault would result in damage to the generation plant and create a widespread outage in the area.  The generation plant is currently providing power to Port Graham, Nanwalek and parts of Seldovia.

The goal today is to make repairs to the main line at Big Tutka Bay and then energize the line in sections from Big Tutka Bay into Seldovia.

If you do not have power, please call HEA’s outage reporting hotline at 1-888-8OUTAGE (1-888-868-8243).

Please remember to always stay away from down power lines. The lines are extremely dangerous and getting too close to a line can cause serious injury or death.

Thank You For Supporting our Fireworks Show

121226 Fireworks Fundraising

Thank you for supporting the Fireworks show for Seldovia’s New Year’s Eve Celebration!

The Swicks won’t be leaving for a few more days on their shopping trip to purchase all the fireworks up past Anchorage – so, if you still would like to support this community tradition, it is not too late!  Please contact Alvin or Roberta Swick directly at 907-234-7473 to add to the fund!  You may also mail a check to the Swicks at PO Box 112, Seldovia, Alaska 99663.

Thanks to the Swicks for continuing to make this event a possibility!  Our job of sending a check their way is the easy part.  The Swicks and the Giles have always handled the “legwork” of the celebration: the trip to purchase the fireworks, setting up the fireworks so that there is a constant and beautiful display for the whole community to enjoy, as well as the extensive clean up after the event into the early hours of the new year!!  This year, Doug and Kathy are up in Anchorage – and will be sorely missed!

Thanks to all of the individuals and families that make this celebration possible and an awesome family memory for many Seldovians!

Thank you!

HEA UPDATE – 3:30pm December 26, 2012 – Still no Power on Jakolof Bay Road

Homer Electric Association crews were able to repair a broken insulator on a power pole along Jakolof Bay Road in Seldovia today, but 352 HEA members in the area remain without power as of  3:30 Wednesday afternoon.  At this time, it is likely that the outage will continue through the evening and into Thursday.

The outage began on Monday morning, December 24th, after a heavy snowfall in the area damaged the power line. HEA crews were unable to get to the area due to harsh weather conditions on Monday.  On Tuesday, Christmas Day, the crew was able to get to Seldovia and begin patrolling the line to assess the damage and try and locate the problem areas.

After replacing the insulator on Jakolof Bay Road, the crew was unable to access the Big Tutka Bay area where there is a problem with the power line.  The only way to gain entry into the area is via a pilot boat.  The crew will return to the area on Thursday in a boat and attempt to make the required repairs.  The goal is to make the repairs and then energize the line in sections from Big Tutka Bay into Seldovia.

Due to the heavy snowfall, HEA cannot risk energizing the line between the Gerry Willard Generation Plant in Seldovia and Big Tutka Bay until it is certain the power line is clear of all trees and other interference.  An unexpected fault would result in damage to the generation plant and create a widespread outage in the area.  The generation plant is currently providing power to Port Graham, Nanwalek and parts of Seldovia.

If you do not have power, please call HEA’s outage reporting hotline at 1-888-8OUTAGE (1-888-868-8243).

Please remember to always stay away from down power lines. The lines are extremely dangerous and getting too close to a line can cause serious injury or death.

Homer Electric Association crews are heading to Seldovia this morning to patrol the power line and hopefully restore power to the 352 meters along Jakolof Bay Road to Big Tutka Bay.

The outage began on Monday morning, December 24th, after a heavy snowfall in the area damaged the power line.  HEA crews were unable to get to the area due to harsh weather conditions on Monday.  On Tuesday, Christmas Day, the crew was able to get to Seldovia and assess the situation.

At this point, it appears there is a problem on the line between Big Tutka Bay and Little Tutka Bay.  Due to the heavy snowfall, HEA cannot risk energizing the line between the Gerry Willard Generation Plant in Seldovia and Big Tutka Bay until it is certain the line is clear of all trees and other interference.  An unexpected fault would result in damage to the generation plant and create a widespread outage in the area.

Around the rest of the Kenai Peninsula, most of the outages that occurred on Christmas Day have been restored.  As of 11:00 am on Wednesday morning, HEA crews are working on a small outage in the North Fork area near Anchor Point and another small outage on Moose Range Drive in the Sterling area.

If you do not have power, please call HEA’s outage reporting hotline at 1-888-8OUTAGE (1-888-868-8243).

Please remember to always stay away from down power lines. The lines are extremely dangerous and getting too close to a line can cause serious injury or death.
