The Kennicott is delayed today in Yakutat, Tuesday 1/1/13, due to vessel vehicle elevator issues.  Presently the engineering department is attempting to troubleshoot the failure; an electrical technician from Juneau and an elevator technician from Anchorage are also being flown in tomorrow afternoon.  The best estimate on the duration of this delay is expected to be at least 24 hours; updates will be posted when they become available.

A gale in the Gulf of Alaska is building seas to 30ft throughout today. The weather is expected to diminish late tonight and not interfere with tomorrows expected departure to Whittier.

Fireworks Cancelled – Until Further Notice

Alvin just called to confirm that the fireworks celebration is cancelled for this evening, and until further notice.  The weather is so poor, and unfortunately it doesn’t look like it is getting any better anytime soon.  They have the fuses dried out, and is hopeful they will be fine, but another wet night would do them in for good!

130101 Fireworks CancelledPlease help us pass the word on to folks that the fireworks show isn’t going to happen tonight – and check back here as we will let you know when it will be rescheduled, on a drier and calmer evening!

Due to Weather – Fireworks Show Rescheduled to January 1 at 8pm

130101 FireworkThumbnailTonight, New Years Eve fireworks show started with hope in spite of the pounding rain and constant winds.  Unfortunately, after only a few fireworks went off, it became quickly apparent that the pyrotechnicians were having trouble with the weather and getting the fireworks to take flight.  After about 10 minutes, the team decided to call it quits.

I spoke with Alvin Swick, who wanted to let everyone know that he has all the fireworks at home and they are working on drying them out.  It appears that the actual fireworks are all OK, but the fuses are too wet to maintain a light.  Alvin is hopeful to have them all dry enough to set off by tomorrow.

Weather permitting, We will have our NEW YEAR’s DAY

Fireworks display tomorrow night!

January 1, 2013 at 8:00pm at the airport.

I will post any further updates as I receive them – hopefully, the weather will cooperate and we will all celebrate together tomorrow night!
