If it is too good to be true…. its another scam!

MoneyScamShad Haller, our Police Chief brought this to my attention, as this is one of the latest scams going around – and it has made it to a resident in Seldovia!  Thankfully, this individual was not fooled by the very official notice and “real” looking check, and notified our local police chief who verified that it was indeed a scam.

Many scammers are out there, preying on the hopes and dreams of folks looking to win big!  This particular scam sent a large check – shown below that the victim is to deposit – which is claimed to “pay for” your tax liability on your winnings!   The hope from the scammer is that you “deposit” the check, and send them the money for the for your taxes – via Western Union Money Transfer or Moneygram!  Obviously, the check will bounce and you will have lost a significant amount of money!

Though the name of the company on the check is legitimate, this offer is not, and as you can see when Chief Shad Haller made a copy of the check – the words “VOID and FAUX” (false or fake – in french) appeared on the copy of the check!

These scam artists are getting clever as they use real names and addresses, mentioning normal shopping companies involved in the “sweepstakes” like Wal-mart, Sears, Home Depot, etc!

Shad just wanted to spread the word – that even here in Seldovia, we are not immune to the criminal activity that is sweeping the nation – trying to take advantage of people who aren’t aware of this criminal behavior trying to steal your money!  Don’t be fooled – if it seems to be too good to be true – it most likely is!   If you get anything like it – do let Shad know, so that he can help inform our community!

At the end of the day, 12 wet participants had persevered the cold wet day to see all the sites and were thrilled with the variety, expertise, and beauty of each gardener’s endeavor.   The tour serves to enlighten, inspire, and instruct new and experienced gardeners alike on what is possible.   The tour is sponsored by Thyme on the Boardwalk  and is part of the Seldovia Garden Club.   If you would like to be added to the mailing list of  gardening events, please contact Suzie Stranik at 440-2213.

HerrickAward2I had a great opportunity to meet with Donna Herrick on the phone the other day regarding their upcoming concert here in Seldovia on the 20th. We enjoyed a conversation regarding her excitement about coming to Alaska, and all the things that she is looking forward to while she’s here. Donna is most excited about meeting her fans in the great state of Alaska!  Herrick was in Alaska three years ago and they are excited to be coming back!   She said “Jenny, I can’t wait to breathe in the fresh air and be in the open environment of Alaska!  I love the camping/roughing it experience – so coming to Seldovia, a remote place in Alaska is super appealing!”  The band will also get a chance to go halibut fishing and is looking forward to the opportunity to be on the water and see the wildlife in our area, they are hoping that their drummer, Jeff  “Bradshaw” doesn’t get seasick on this trip!

When I asked Donna how she got started singing, she said that it all started in Southern Gospel music.  One of the greatest things was the crowd in Gospel was so gracious, it was a very safe environment to learn and grow and develop her skills. Donna mentioned that when she was young you could never have seen her on stage at all, but with the gospel music crowd who was so accepting, it was a great way to  ” cut her teeth”,  before she went to Nashville and started writing music.

The band is made up of four individuals: Donna and her husband Kerry, Jeff  “Bradshaw” the drummer and Jefferson Rogers on guitar.  Donna expressed with enthusiasm that this is her best team ever !  She and her husband have been together 12 years and had various support band members.  “Often a band may work really great together, musically, but  for every hour on stage they have 23 Continue Reading
