Close up 2014 basket 007We are so thankful for the support we’ve received from the community for the student’s trip to Washington DC for the Close Up conference in April.  With just one month to go until the departure, the students are in full and final fundraising mode to finance the lodging, tuition and airfare for the trip.

Thank you especially to the following sponsors who generously donated the following items for the grand basket raffle!  As you can see, there is a TON of value in these items, and anyone who lives or visits Seldovia, Homer or Anchorage will greatly enjoy spoiling themselves with these wonderful gifts, stays and travel certificates!

SVT LogoSeldovia Village Tribe Launches Community Oral History Project Preserving Seldovia’s Photos, Films and Memories

Do you know your family’s stories? Have you thought about how to pass them down to future generations? Do you have family photographs and slides that you wonder how to protect, or old VHS tapes or family films that you can’t watch anymore because they are deteriorating or you don’t have the equipment? The Seldovia Museum has an answer!

If you have a post office box in Seldovia, you may remember getting a survey in the mail about a year ago, asking about your potential interest in an oral history project the Seldovia Museum was hoping to do. We got a terrific response, showing strong support from the community of Seldovia, and we are thrilled to tell you that this project was awarded funding from the Institute for Museum & Library Services. The project, called “In Our Own Words”, is now underway!

SVT Museum Old 4th of July photosThere are several parts to this project. We are surveying recordings we already have, as well as gearing up to do new interviews and add material, such as historical photos and video, to our archives. But this is truly a community project: although our main goal is to record the many stories and images of Seldovia for the public, we also want to assist community members in preserving your own Seldovia-related stories, photos, videos, and audio recordings. We can Continue Reading

Exxon Valdez: 25 Years Later

| March 22, 2014 | 0 Comments

By Rosanna McInnes

We will commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill with a statewide Video-teleconference and presentation.  Join us at the Seldovia Public Library from 7 – 9 p.m. on Monday, March 24th.  This will be our first presentation with our own content and the presentations will be made by local members of SOS and Nuka Bay Research.

The oil spill was a huge part of the history of this community and people who were here then have deep and painful memories about that time.  This will be their chance to share and remember.  Bring your memorabilia, photographs, or stories, and be ready to listen and share, as SOS talks about the evolution of small town oil spill response and it’s future.  Audience members will be given a chance to share their memories or special items that help to commemorate the spill.  We will connect via OWL to Barrow, Kotzebue, Homer, Valdez, Craig, Glenallen, and the Loussac Library in Anchorage!   This event will be recorded by the Alaska state library to keep in their archives as well.

You don’t want to miss this special event!
