How we handle the information you share with us.
This Privacy Policy explains what information Seldovia.com collects, how we use it, and the outside services on which the site relies. Seldovia.com is a website created for the community of Seldovia, Alaska, and her visitors and friends, operated by Seldovia Property (Jenny Chissus, Broker/Owner). Information you give us
We only collect the information you choose to send through the forms on the site:
- Contact form — your name, email address, the subject or topic you pick, and your message.
- Add your household to the online phone book — your name, and any phone number, email, mailing address, or photo you choose to include. You decide, field by field, what is shown publicly and what stays private.
- Add a business listing — the business name, owner name, category, phone, email, address, hours, and description you provide.
- Photo submissions and the monthly photo contest — any photos you upload and the name or caption you include with them. For contest entries we also collect your email, phone number, how you'd like your photo credited, and where and when the photo was taken, so we can contact winners and credit you correctly.
- Community calendar — public information from social media posts, used for the community calendar.
Information collected automatically
We use Google Analytics to understand how the site is used: which pages are visited, how long people stay, how they found the site, and whether they're on a phone or computer, along with general location (such as city or region). Google Analytics uses cookies to do this. We use these numbers only to improve the site; we do not use advertising or build profiles of individual visitors. You can block these cookies in your browser settings, or use Google's opt-out add-on at tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout.
As with any website, the services that host the site and deliver its content (listed below) may also record standard technical information such as your IP address and browser type in their own server logs.
How we use your information
- To reply to messages and requests you send us.
- To publish directory and business listings you submit — after review, and showing only the fields you marked public.
- To display photos you submit to the site.
- To operate and improve the community features of the site.
We do not ever sell your personal information.
Your privacy choices in the phone book
When you add yourself or your household to the phone book, each detail (phone, email, address) has its own public or private setting. Anything left private is not displayed publicly. You can ask us to change or remove your listing at any time.
Some names and phone numbers were carried over from the previous Seldovia.com phone book, where they were already listed publicly. If you're listed and would like anything changed or removed, please contact us and we'll take care of it right away.
Outside services the site uses
Seldovia.com relies on the following third-party services. Each has its own privacy policy that governs how it handles data.
- Supabase — stores form submissions and uploaded photos (database and file hosting).
- Resend — sends us an email alert when someone uses the contact form or asks to be added to the phone book, so we can reply promptly.
- Google Analytics — counts visits and page views, as described above.
- Google Calendar — shows community events. Google may set cookies when the calendar is displayed.
- Tockify — provides the community events schedule.
- YouTube, Vimeo, and Facebook — play videos inside blog posts and property listings. These services may set their own cookies when a video loads.
- Buy Me a Coffee — if you choose to support the site, your contribution is handled entirely on their site; we don't receive your payment details. The Buy Me a Coffee button on the site is simply a link to their page.
- Open-Meteo, NOAA (Tides & Currents), and the National Weather Service — supply weather, tide, and marine conditions. No personal information is sent to them.
- wsrv.nl (Weserv) — delivers the harbor webcam image.
- WebCOOS — streams the live City ferry dock webcam and the Kasitsna Bay Lab webcam.
- OpenStreetMap and Leaflet — draw the Find Me Map. If you tap “Find me,” your browser asks your permission first; your location is used only on your own device to show the blue dot and is never sent to us or saved.
- Google Fonts, jsDelivr, and cdnjs — deliver fonts and code the site uses; these may log your IP address as your browser loads them.
- Netlify — hosts the website.
Children's privacy
This site is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has sent us information, contact us and we will remove it.
Keeping and removing your information
We keep submissions for as long as needed to run the directory and community features. To update or remove your information or listing, email us at Info@Seldovia.com.
Security
We take reasonable steps to protect the information the site collects. No method of storage or transmission over the internet is completely secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security.
Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will change the effective date at the top of this page.
