Cyber Crimes Affecting Seldovia Residents
ATTENTION: 7 April 2014
Recently there has been a rash of cyber crimes in Seldovia. These crimes have been coming at us in many forms. The criminals (located not in Alaska) call people saying they are from a government agency, publisher clearing house, or another legit business, telling you that you won something or you need to register with their company etc. They also have been using viral programs on computers to fake system vulnerabilities and give you a website and number to call.
These criminals also use emails, Facebook, and other online programs to get you to contact them saying they are from Microsoft or Norton or Wal Mart. The use of big company names seems to be their forte. If you have contact with these people, hang up or disconnect from them immediately! Do not give them any information. You will need to call the Seldovia Police Department to file a report.
If you have already given out personal information before you contact me, listed below are the agencies and organizations that you will need to contact to ensure your information is not used to open new bank account, credit cards or to purchase items online.
Please remember: If you did not request contact from the person
that is trying to get this information, it is more than likely, a SCAM!
Contact the Federal Trade Commission. Call the FTC’s identity theft hotline at 877-438-4338 and file a complaint. The FTC does not resolve individual consumer problems itself, but your complaint may lead to law enforcement action.
Contact Credit reporting agencies and notify them of your situation.
